Quitting Corporate America
I recall what feels like eons ago, starting my first job in corporate America. I recall orientation. I recall shaking hands with mid-level executives and HR professionals, speaking to the growth opportunities, and what awaited me if I had what it took to climb the corporate ladder.
And I remember, looking at the stressed and frustrated contortions of the faces of many of executives I was introduced to. I was asked to attend meetings that were above my pay grade, because I worked my derrière off, put up the numbers and crushed the quotas, and learned their systems faster than anyone else had.
And I remember sitting at my desk, looking at a $50 Marshal Fields gift card I was awarded for bring in over 2 million dollars in new revenues in less than 3 months. I remember, looking at the phones, computers, banking equipment, and surveillance cameras. The organizational hierarchy, all the way up to the ownership residing in another country. I remember taking inventory of the branding and marketing, and thinking…..
This company started out as someone’s idea. They probably ran themselves into the ground, and drove their family crazy. I’m sitting in their children’s inheritance. The end result of their sweat equity and sacrifice. And thought to myself.
Me & my progeny too.
